An individual's health should be the most important part of a person's life. Without a good standard of health an individual will suffer in their quality of life and also in their length of their life. Whilst for many people life can appear an inexorable plod through mediocrity until a long anticipated dark and anti-climactic end, for most people life should be embraced and to do this you need your health.

When a person refuses to travel too far to receive health care or complains about an ambulance taking 40 minutes to reach them, it is a fairly obvious point that it is because the hospital is over 30 minutes away to drive. People are happy to move houses to ensure their child goes to the "right" school but is unwilling to move near to a hospital so that their healthcare is close to home.

This decision to prioritise over factors such as transport links or a park over one of the fundamentals of life such as health care really does not warrant sympathy. The modern press are happy to criticise a system for letting down the average Joe but they should really look at how that average Joe put himself into a position to be "let down" and perhaps conclude that Joe let himself down.

Public health care provision is one of the most talked about policies in the world. Every country has their own system and nobody is happy. There is a good reason for this in that by definition a free and public healthcare will always be oversubscribed. This was made quite clear at the birth of the NHS in the UK by its founder Aneurin Bevan who was a staunch socialist and yet still agreed that healthcare can never provide a service that fulfils the demands of a nation. Famously when talking about the closing of small hospitals for larger more clinical ones he stated:

"I would rather be kept alive in the efficient if cold altruism of a large hospital than expire in a gush of warm sympathy in a small one."
