Blue Light Glasses - Does It Work?
You are not the only one who has ever noticed your eyes feeling tired and dry after staring at a computer monitor for hours.
Wearing blue light glasses may sound like a good solution, but a recent study determined there was little evidence to support the use of blue-blocking filters in the prevention of digital eye strain.
Blue light can disrupt your sleep cycle because it interferes with your circadian rhythm, which is your internal clock telling you when it's morning or night. Blue light glasses may be an option if your insomnia is severe or you scroll through your phone at night.
How can we deal with the adverse effects of using digital screens when most people are unable to avoid using computers, tablets, and phones every day?

Blue Light Glasses: What is it?
Specially crafted blue light blocking glasses contain lenses which are designed to filter or block out the blue light from digital screens. They are advertised with claims of protecting your eyes against eye strain and reducing potential retina damage due to prolonged blue light exposure.
Are blue-light glasses able to reduce strain in the eyes? Blue light is not the only reason for many eye problems that can be caused by digital screens.
Many people have problems with their eyes due to digital screens. Dr. Bajic claims that most issues fall under the umbrella of computer vision syndrome. It's also known as digital eye strain. It can be caused by:
- Itchy eyes.
- Dry your eyes.
- Brute vision.
- Sensitivity toward light
- Shoulder and neck pain
- It is hard to concentrate.
- Eyes burning
- You have itchy eyes.
- You have a hard time seeing.
CVS refers to a wide range of discomfort and eye strain issues. The screen is constantly moving and shifting the focus of your eyes. The glare, contrast and other effects can cause eye irritation. Although you may feel eye irritation due to long hours spent at the computer, this is not due to blue light.
Dr. Bajic states that when we focus too much on a screen or other digital device, our corneas don't blink as often, which leads to cornea irritation and dryness. Eye discomfort can be caused by focusing too much on objects close to the eyes, such as a computer screen, book or other device. If we focus our attention on a distant object instead, however, then our eyes can relax.
Blue Light Glasses: Is it Bad to Wear?
While blue glasses won't help prevent digital strain from happening, they can be worn.
Dr. Bajic says that it is safe to wear them throughout the day.
Here are some tips to help you deal with digital eye strain. While it is possible to avoid using blue light glasses, there are still things that can be done to relieve your eyes.
Use Light Sensitivity glasses
Dr. Bajic states that FL-41 tints can be used for light sensitive people who have migraines, light-sensitive eyes, or any other conditions.
The FL-41 color filters wavelengths of green and blue. This tint is a range from pinkish to amber-like. These colors can be irritating for patients suffering from light sensitivity. A study cited photophobia, the medical term for light sensitivity, as the most bothersome symptom for those with migraines.
Online and at many optometrists, you can search for options to purchase light-sensitivity glasses. You should check with your insurance provider to see if FL-41 tint is covered.
Use the rule of 20-20-20
Take 20 seconds to gaze at something 20ft away every 20 minutes.
"By looking further away it forces your eyes to relax and breaks accommodation by forcing them to look at a distance," Dr. Bajic says. You can also blink back at your normal rate with it.
Make artificial tears
Eye drops are a great way to keep your eyes moist while at work.
The eyes are sensitive to preservatives and should only be used four times per day for regular artificial tears. Preservative-free artificial tear should not be used if the person is using them frequently.
Dr. Bajic says artificial tears should be applied as lip balms or lotions. Most people do not need them, but some may find it helpful to include them in their daily routine as needed.
Place your arm about 25 to 63 centimeters from the screen.
Many people are too near the computer, causing eye strain. To improve readability, you can back up and increase the font size.
Dr. Bajic says that people should keep a safe distance from screen-based screens.
Get a pair of blue light glasses!
Your best option for preventing eye strain is to spend less and have good habits all day. If you are unable to fall asleep due to your use of screens at night, however, these may be an option.
